Fossil Palm

Fossil Palm, is an extinct genus of palm that lived from the Late Cretaceous period (83 million years ago) until the Early Miocene period (34 million years ago). The fossilization process involves the replacement of organic wood cells by silicate minerals over time. The characteristic spotted look is the preservation of cell structures within the original wood. Fossil Palm is a variety of chalcedony and is around 7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
