How do I clean the gel stuff?
To remove dust and debris, simply use a piece of clear tape like carton sealing tape, or "scotch" tape. Make sure it is standard clear tape, then press the tape on the gel, rub the tape gently and remove.
How long do the boxes last? Are they reusable?
We have had gemstones in the prototype boxes for about 3 years and have moved thousands of gemstones from one box to another during sorting. They can be used many times over.
Can I touch the gel stuff?
It won't hurt you or the gel if you do, but we don't recommend it. The more fingers that touch it, the dirtier it gets, and the more often you have to clean it. Why create extra work? Use your tweezers!
What is the best way to put gems in?
The best way is to use gemstone tweezers to put them in and take them out.
What is the best way to take gems out?
The gems are held in place with surface tension. The tension is very strong in an up and down direction, but weak to "peeling". With your gem tweezers, gently grip the gemstone and "peel" to the left or right. You will find they come right off!
Can you damage the gel?
Yes! In fact, quite easily if you aren't careful. The gel is extremely durable with the following exception: don't puncture it. Poking it with fingernails, tweezers, or any sharp object will put little holes in the gel that will not recover.
Do I need to press hard on the gemstones to make them stick?
No! In fact, it takes very little pressure to place a gemstone on the gel. With your tweezers, place your gemstone on the gel and very gently, with your tweezers, give the pavilion a little tap. That's it. If you find a gem is lifting on one side after placing it, you can try tapping it again. However, it is likely that a very tiny piece of lint or similar was on the table of the gem or gel, breaking the surface tension. Make sure the gemstone and the gel are free of debris.
Can I use this box for cabochons?
No. Cabochons are mostly rounded on the surface. You need a flat surface for the correct tension to hold the gems, and cabs are flat on the bottom rather than the top.
